What does Superman's black symbol mean in "Kingdom Come"?
Jul 6, 2020 · Over the years Superman's symbol changed a lot but I believe that Alex Ross who created miniseries Kingdom Come re-imagined the "electric" emblem with color scheme used in 1939 comics and 1941 animated series. So black and red color scheme is not something new but borrowed from 1939.

Dec 14, 2021 · Unless I am mistaken, the idea of the Superman symbol meaning "hope" originates in Birthright from 2004, so I don't think this logo from Kingdom Come from 1996 is intended to have that implication. I think the intended meaning is a little simpler than that: it means this is recognizably Superman... but not exactly Superman as he should be.

I take the diagonal across the black to be like a "no" sign obviously, to reject the current superhero community. I also think the logo is supposed to be extremely simple and blunt and severe to reinforce the line that Superman says: "There's a distinction between right and wrong in the universe and that distinction is not hard to make."

There's been a lot of speculation that Superman's journey in the film will be similar to that of his in 'Kingdom Come' inasmuch as he comes into a world where powered heroes run amok without a clear moral code or set of traditional superhero ethics - maybe they do the right things, but for the wrong reasons and occasionally cross lines which sew fear and disdain in the citizenry.
