Feb 10, 2010 · I have a basket from XXL. They make a fine basket and the proceeds go for a good cause. I like the basket to hold lump for a good bed of coals and do my cooking with splits. I think the basket keeps the splits together and gives me a better fire. That's my $0.02.

Apr 29, 2014 · I've been trying to use the Minion Method in the firebox of my offset smoker, in order to do 8 hour plus smokes without having to change the coals frequently. I keep the vents almost completely closed, and the temp has no problem staying in the 220 to 240 degree range. However, the coals don't ignite over a long period of time like the method says.

May 11, 2016 · I use charcoal in my smoker to get the fire going and for heat at the beginning, If i were to use exclusively lump charcoal i would use a a couple bags at least for a short smoke. I just put on hot coals in a basket then put wood on top. besides good wood around where i live is cheaper than bags of charcoal and gives a better flavor.

Apr 23, 2023 · From pencil size up to half splits. Think of splits in btu's not size. A small pencil size split is enough when you just need to keep the fire going or to start your fire but you don't really need the heat. Fire management is different in every smoker and every smoker acts differently every day depending on outdoor conditions.
