Oct 3, 2013 · FWIW, when Clay Dot first came out, it was Alliant that said to use Hodgdon Clays data and bushing chart. The Alliant manual still says "Duplicates the performance of Hodgdon Clays, at an economical price". According to Mec, the #31 bushing will drop 16.9 grains of both Clays and Clay Dot. Mar 30, 2010 · For example, bushing # 30 in a previous chart indicated 16.7 of Clays. The word is Clays and Clay Dot drop the "same" per Allient. But in this chart bushing # 30 drops 17.6 of Clay Dot. This agrees, mostly, with the drops I was getting in my thread "inconsistant powder drops with Clay Dot"; with the exception being my low drop of 15 grains.

Going to the Hornady chart, I see a #480 is supposed to drop 19 grs. of Red Dot and, therefore, should also drop a bit less than 17.4 of Clay Dot. Aug 27, 2015 · The Alliant Powder chart in their 2015 Reloaders Guide shows a MEC 32 Bushings for 17.4 grains. That being said, I've been using Clay Dot since the BS happened with Hodgdon and their Clays. I'm dr ping a 17.3 average using the 32 bushing. I'm weighing at least 1 shell per box. Mar 19, 2015 · There is no bushing chart for Promo (actually, Number 2 just provided one). This is because the density of Promo may change between different lots. My take is that Alliant blends Promo to get the same burn rate as Red Dot, but does not do the extra step to bring the density to Red Dot specifications. Hence the lower cost for Promo. Jason

May 16, 2014 · My 9000 drops about 18.1 to 18.2 with a 32 bushing. 31 bushing drops about 17.6. With Clay Dot and Clays, I'd rather be a tad light with 1 1/8 oz loads. These powders hit the wall, pressure wise, pretty quick. There can be some variation from lot to lot. I'd strongly recommend that you obtain and use a decent scale.

My experience is that 17.0 grains of Clay Dot uses a .438 bushing, the Hodgdon guide lists .441 bushing for the same weight of Clays ( i.e. one bushing smaller) I have found that a .441 throws 17.2 grains and .453 drops 18 grains of Clay Dot. This is consistent with which another reloader experienced.
