Early Casement Window Furniture - Building Conservation
In the 17th and 18th centuries, cross-windows (Figure 2) were common. These have a central mullion and a horizontal transom set somewhere above the mid point, and the casement takes up the whole of one of the lower lights.
In compiling the first American builder’s guidebook, The Country Builder’s Assistant (1797), joiner Asher Benjamin signaled his break with the eighteenth century by illustrating three new muntin profiles that were appropriate for the incoming federal style of architecture.
Before the sixteenth century, most windows were constructed from stone mullions or timber frames with unglazed openings; these could be closed with either sliding or folding wooden shutters, or oiled cloth or paper, or even thin sheets of horn.
