The following pages show how to make a nest box designed for Tree Swallows, one that has the spacious interior their nestlings need, depth and an overhanging roof that make it difficult for predators to reach nest contents, and thick walls and adjustable ventilation to reduce detrimental impacts of temperature extremes.
Tree Swallows are one of the first swallows to migrate back to the Meadowlands for the spring nesting season. Hundreds of pairs can be found in and around the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands’ marshes, creeks and streams.

Ten boxes can be made from one 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (see below). Long Point Boxes are slightly larger inside (5 ½" x 6" floors) than Golondrinas Boxes (5" x 5" floors). This gives nestlings more room to spread out in hot weather, lets them move outside the nest cup to defecate, and allows more space for wing exercise prior to fledging.
