May 23, 2010 · I have a chance to pick up a 5 speed Schwinn Collegiate today for $35. I was wondering what it's value was. Is it a good bike to flip, or is it collectible. Any help would be appreciated. I have attached pictures. Thanks.

I just picked up a 1980s Schwinn Collegiate (electric blue) to use as a putzing around town / errands bike. EDIT: pretty sure it's a 1985/1986 based on catalogs - based on Shimano 3 speed hub. The rims measure about 24 inches in diameter and are stamped with “FEMCO 26 x 1 3/8 Made in Taiwan”.

In the past few weeks I have restored my 1969 blue Schwinn Collegiate five-speed and I have been very impressed with the results. I first got this from the bike co-op near UPenn in Philly in 2012 or so for a mere $25. I then got it in riding condition, which just meant replacing brake pads, IIRC, but didn't restore further.

This is definitely a passion/hobby project and I will probably end up spending more on parts than the bike is worth. :) Many of the parts are in relatively good condition, but I want to upgrade the wheels/tires and probably brakes.
