Oct 19, 2011 · Abandon the need to use only paper hulls in the 16 and 20 Gauges. The paper hulls currently available for these 2 gauges are disappointing at best. Besides current loading data for card and fiber wads is easier to come by in plastic hulls. The 12 gauge is a different story as Federal still makes some great paper target hulls, they are good stuff.

I load 14.5 grains of Alliant 20/28 with a Claybuster CB1075-20 wad in a Winchester Universal hull (tapered hull) for my son. I load 14.7 grains of Alliant 20/28 with a Ballistic Products SG20L wad in a Federal Top Gun hull (straight wall hull) for myself.

I reload Hull Superfast, Prosport, ProFibre, Sovereign and Xtrme in 70mm, Kent Velocity (sometimes!), Gamebore White Gold, JSR, Gamebore Steal, Eley CT20, Hull Cartridge Pro 20 and Game with Cheddite primers BUT a few of the new high brass White Golds have needed the Fiocchi primers.

Jan 26, 2012 · My experience with them is that since the paper hulls have a rather thick tube, standard AA type wads fit them very well, and we have used thousands of them in hunting loads over the years. I cannot begin to recall the amount of Federal papers we loaded with 1-3/8 oz shot, using the WAA12R wad. Lighter payloads will use WAA12's or WAA12SL's.

Feb 15, 2021 · You are referring to the contracted shells made by Rio for Federal. Now Federal makes there shells in house. I loaded some new hulls last night, federal primer. The change was made approx 2 years ago. Essentially same hull as paper base hull, but plastic base. I do like the plastic base better than the paper base.

Oct 6, 2015 · The Federal 12C1 wad, now discontinued, has a replacement made by Claybuster. The number of that wad is the CB3118-12AR. Works quite well. Actually, since the paper hulls have thicker walls, hence the internal diameter is smaller than the plastic hulls, the use of wads made for tapered wall cases fit quite well in those Federal Papers.

Dec 15, 2011 · The Federals have the typical paper base wad and the Remingtons have a plastic base wad that appears to be similar to the Winchester product. With the 10 gauge, your selection of reloadable hulls is extremely limited. Now, I also do not know of anybody who shoots the 10 gauge in any sporting shotgun game which relegates this gauge to hunting.

Sep 19, 2015 · I like to load my BP in Federal Paper shells with 1/2 inch fiber on top of over powder wad. I find with paper they seal the chamber in my 97'pump and no residue in action. Also I know I won't mix them with my smokeless which are all plastic. I have developed,some good loads at 1150 to 1200 fpsand shoot skeet and CAS knock downs with good success.
