See an example of this I found with a quick google: https://ax23w4.itch.io/pixelate. Working within 3D is easier for a lot of reasons. There are much more assets available. You can use 3D animation assets too and try to retarget them.

For a pure production point of view, 3D is better for iteration. Especially for animations. Tweak a 3D animation is easy. In pixel art, you need to redo it. One very interesting workflow is the one used for Dead Cell from Motion Twins. They are modeling their character in 3D then generate their spritesheet from an animation in Maya in pixel art.
