Aug 21, 2024 — One of our Ensigns in Reactor Department on the U.S.S. Nimitz in the early 1980's had the dubious honor of being the "Bull" Ensign, and on a carrier that is not really a good thing. He wore a large engraved bar, like the one shown, on his khaki shirt collar. I remember it was beveled, but I am not sure if it was curved like the one shown.

As the Bull Ensign, a job I held somewhat briefly, I was responsible for making sure my junior ensigns were behaving themselves, getting their qualifications done, and in general, not being a nuisance.

Apr 29, 2010 — I remember on the Kitty Hawk, one squadron had a set of over sized Aviators wings made for the "Nugget" (most Junior Pilot in the squadron), and on most surface ships, the senior ensign wore a set of gold bars for a jacket (the large ones) as collar devices with the word "BULL" engraved on them (thus the BULL ENSIGN).
