ANZ Group Holdings Ltd.’s new chief executive officer will face a long list of challenges when he takes up his role at Australia’s second-largest lender by assets next July.

(Reuters) -Australian lender ANZ Group said on Monday it had appointed former HSBC executive Nuno Matos as its next CEO, replacing Shayne Elliott who is set to retire in July 2025 after nine years in the role.

The succession means three of the country’s four major banks will have appointed new chief executives this year. The Portuguese banker will start on July 3.

He’s mad about sports, including tennis and legend Rafael Nadal, but when it comes to the high-octane world of banking incoming ANZ chief executive Nuno Matos is described as a keen adopter of technology and “very focused”.

ANZ Chairman Paul O’Sullivan has announced Nuno Matos (pictured above left) as the bank’s new CEO. Matos will succeed Shayne Elliott (pictured above right) in July 2025. Matos, a seasoned banker with over three decades of global experience, has led retail, wholesale, and commercial operations across multiple markets.

Matos will relocate from Hong Kong to Melbourne and replace outgoing CEO Shayne Elliot in July 2025.
