The Capitals’ clash Tuesday night against San Jose had all the makings of a trap game — Washington was riding a four-game winning streak that had featured high-octane offense every night while the upstart visitors had shaken off a poor start to play inspired hockey for more than a month.

William Eklund scored 39 seconds into overtime, Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves and the San Jose Sharks ended the Washington Capitals’ winning streak at four by beating them 2-1.

Nic Dowd scored for the Capitals (17-6-2), who had won four in a row. Logan Thompson made 29 saves. Toffoli gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 19:00 of the first period. Toffoli intercepted a Rasmus Sandin pass at center ice, entered the offensive zone and fired a wrist shot past Thompson from the top of the slot.
