Nissan is wading through troubled waters at present, but the situation could be even more dire than the company lets on.

Global car giant Nissan is on the brink of collapse after longtime partner Renault revealed plans to sell off its interests in the Japanese carmaker.

According to Motor1, two unnamed Nissan executives spoke with the Financial Times, telling the publication that the legendary Japanese auto company, which produced timeless classics such as the Nissan Skyline, GT-R and 350Z, has "12 to 14 months survive."

With Renault reducing its stake in Nissan, the Japanese carmaker is now looking to find a major shareholder... or risk financial peril.

As all of this is taking place, Renault is selling Nissan shares. It owned up to 46 percent of the Japanese brand for a time. Now, it’s below 40 percent and will continue to fall. At the same time, Honda is finalizing a deal with Nissan to co-develop electric vehicles.
