Melbourne teenager Holly Bowles has died in a Thai hospital nine days after consuming a suspected methanol-tainted drink in Laos, her father has confirmed.

A football team in Melbourne's south was holding a vigil for two of its players who were poisoned overseas, when news of Ms Bowles death arrived.

Methanol is a pure form of alcohol, typically found in industrial-strength products like paint stripper or petrol. It does not have a distinct smell or colour, and it’s toxic to humans.

Following the news of her tragic passing, the owner of Frank’s, a Melbourne café where Bowles had worked for more than two years while saving up for her adventure of a lifetime with Jones, paid tribute to the young woman they had “taken under their wing”.
