( MENAFN - IANS) New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed a resolution extending the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, until the last day of the Budget Session next year.

After protests by opposition members on the panel, the Joint Parliamentary Committee scrutinising the Waqf (Amendment) Bill passed a resolu.

The parliamentary panel's meetings have become a virtual battleground between the opposition and the ruling party members, who have been vociferously debating the changes to the Waqf Bill proposed by the government.

BJP member Jagdambika Pal, head of joint committee of Parliament, had said that the draft is ready but opposition members have demanded an extension for a more thorough discussion. They had met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to press their demand.

Opposition boycotted JPC meeting on Waqf (amendment) bill. Opposition leaders left the meeting midway citing that the chairman had announced to table the draft of Waqf (Amendment) report of JPC on 29th November which all opposition parties have boycotted,

The opposition alleged that its proceedings had become a mockery. They, however, returned to attend the meeting after an hour amid indications that the committee chairperson would seek an extension in its term.
