We didn't climb the volcano as it was covered with clouds the whole time we were in La Fortuna. Maybe worth a visit on a clear day. Full review by Edwin F

Out of all the excursions we did in the area this was the least impressive. It's basically a 1.5-mile hike to the place where the lava flowed. Just some rocky ground to see. The trek through the t… Full review by Dan E

I would recommend visiting Arenal Volcano National Park for a morning / afternoon of easy to moderate hiking. We were a family of 4 adults & 2 children. The drive to the car park / entrance / visit… Full review by lifebelowzero

My husband and I would like to do the self guided hiking in April. Do I need to purchase tickets in advance and if so is there a website where I can do that? The only website I found at sinac.go, doesn't seem to work when I push the buy button. Thanks

As far as the walking the park without a guide, its very simple, we didnt have a guide either. From The Springs Resort and Spa to the entrance is about a 25 minute drive. I did see a few Ubers in Lafortuna but im not sure how common they really are, i saw them down town. While you are at Arenal National Park, i would recommend the Arenal Observatory Lodge hiking trails. These trails are at the entrance of the Observatory Lodge hotel but i actually enjoyed them more then the National Park. There are multiple trails in all different variety..when you first go in they are paved side walks but then it turns into dirt trails everywhere else. Theres also a tall viewing platforms where you get really good views of the volcano, unique rainbow eucalyptus trees (google them! they arent painted) & waterfalls.
Q:
Do the guides have guns incase of a jaguar, or puma attacking ? I have heard there are jaguars in the national park .

We didn't have a guide so i am unsure. Although it is a jungle-the chances of seeing an animal like that are slim to none. The animals have learned where the trails are so they steer clear, they dont want you to see them nor do they really care to see you. Seeing a cat isnt impossible but you'll have a hard time finding anything else other then birds, a few butterflies and small geckos.

If i pay the general admission to get inside the park how much are the individual activities. What is the cost of each activity without being part of a guided tour package.
A:
No extra cost! Just a hike. However, a very nice hot springs close by, which our tour package included. We had a rainy day, but still enjoyed the hot springs in the rain.

If we just show up will we be able to do the various activities or does one have to go with a guided tour? If so, which activities are fine to do on our own and which should/needs to be done with tour? Thanks!
A:
You can do many hikes on your own. A guide will help you spot wildlife you'd easily overlook, but most of the trails are open to the public. Some require fees.
