Sherman Tree is in Sequoia National Park in the mountains well to the southeast of San Francisco while the tall redwoods along Hwy. 101 are to the north of SF, so not sure whether you’re actually planning to see both. Either way, I’d guess that flying into SFO or Oakland would be your best bet. If you do go to Sequoia National Park, Montecito Sequoia Lodge is a good option - fairly rustic accommodations but centrally located and good buffet style meals are included, and very family oriented.
