This is a great place to escape the LV heat. At 7000' it's a good 20-30F cooler. There is plenty of hiking trails up here too. And a desert overlook with a bit of history on the nuclear bomb testing … Full review by 132kevinp

If you take the switchback that isn't far from the Retreat on Mt. Charleston until it comes to the split where you go up to the ski resort, there are a ton of pull offs that will allow you to get out… Full review by jmarlow74

No, there isn't a tram. You just drive up to the parking area, have a nice meal, walk around a bit, look at the Native American handcrafts, and then that's about it. A great place to relax, but not a lot to do. In the summer some hiking trails will be open. The road, by-the-way, doesn't go anywhere close to the top of the mountain. I was up there two weeks ago and the snow was melting rapidly. It could be gone by now.
How are the roads to drive to Mount Charleston or nearby to play in the snow today

Heavy with snow. There is an avalanche warning at this time and with this area being as popular as it is people continue to come so it is very busy. Chains are required. Parking is almost impossible because parking is prohibited along side the road in most areas. Snow play towards Lee Canyon is the best area but weekends are the busiest time. But if you can get there through the crowds good luck. Hope that helps.
Hi - where did you park to start the hike? I'm really intrigued by the 1 hr hike with beautiful views. Was it a difficult hike? I know that you said that elevation changed 1000ft; are the trails developed or will we be going up scree etc. Thanks for your advice. Dave

From the approach road to Mt Charleston, south entrance, stop at the Spring Mountain Visitor Center. It's very nice and they were very helpful. That's how we got started. I'm sure you can find the type of trail you're looking for. Also, this area is much easier to deal with than the Red Rocks. You can hike paved trails right there by the Visitors Center.
