Before returning the monitor, I picked up an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable (1.5m), and replaced the cable from the Studio display - it worked fine.

Apple is suppose to release one that's 3m long (it was mentioned in OG tech spec accessories), but somehow that didn't happen. If you want something that's even longer, you'll have to wait for Corning to release their optical cable.

Nov 18, 2016 · Thunderbolt 3 doesn't support USB-C Display Port Alternate Mode and USB-C doesn't support Thunderbolt 2, but Thunderbolt 3 does support Thunderbolt 2. If you want to drive a Thunderbolt 1/2 display, you have to use a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1/2 dongle, anything else won't work.

Connect the adapter to the hard drive, then run a Thunderbolt cable from the adapter to the Mac, like this: Mac > Thunderbolt cable > adapter > hard drive
