The blaze stoked memories of the deadly 1991 Oakland Hills Fire that killed 25 people, destroyed more than 3,000 homes and caused $1.68 billion in property damage in Oakland and Berkeley. The Keller Fire began one day shy of the 33rd anniversary of that blaze.

The Oakland Fire Department Chief on Saturday said the fire in the Oakland Hills was 50% contained. Chief Damon Covington said crews would be in the area throughout the day, and they will be removing some eucalyptus trees for safety reasons.

The Keller Fire in the East Oakland hills is 90% contained on Monday morning, fire officials said. The wind-driven fire broke out about 2:25 p.m. on Friday near Keller Avenue and Interstate Highway 580 and quickly spread, damaging two homes and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate.
