County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer has submitted a request to federal officials to consider the Tijuana River Valley as a possible Superfund site.

Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer renewed calls to designate the Tijuana River Valley as a federal superfund site on Thursday, days after the Board of Supervisors voted to delay initiate the process to participate in the program.

The petition is in partnership with Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre, National City Councilmember Marcus Bush and Mayor Ron Morrison, and Chair of the Air Pollution Control District Jack Shu. This is in an effort to pursue a Superfund designation from the EPA.

People working and living near the polluted Tijuana River Valley and area beaches have an opportunity to share their experiences with a federal agency that monitors community health.

County officials said the pollution problem is far from triggering a mandatory mass exodus from South Bay, but it’s not totally outside the realm of possibilities.
