Mercedes-Benz opened Europe's first battery recycling plant with an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process making it the first car manufacturer worldwide to close the battery recycling loop with its own in-house facility.

Today, Mercedes-Benz opened its first battery-recycling plant in Germany. The new plant will use an "integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical" approach to recycling electric vehicle batteries and expects to recover more than 96 percent of the valuable minerals and metals used in EV batteries.

The automaker opened a battery recycling facility that it says will process enough materials for 50,000 battery modules each year.

This facility introduces an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process, expected to achieve a recovery rate exceeding 96%.

Europe's first battery recycling plant with an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process has been opened by Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes is opening its own battery recycling plant in southern Germany, in an attempt to recover raw materials such as nickel, cobalt and lithium.

Mercedes-Benz electric car batteries are now being recycled in Kuppenheim, Germany. The car manufacturer has opened its first recycling factory for batteries there - and aims to recover 96 per cent of the battery materials.

The plant runs on 100% green electricity. Mercedes-Benz already offers reconditioned batteries as spare parts for all of its existing EVs. Mercedes-Benz has opened the doors to an innovative new battery recycling plant in southern Germany that it says “creates a genuine circular economy” for the brand’s electric vehicles.
