Halsey's 'Great Impersonator' is as sad as it is sprawling and ambitious — and, as one of the year's best albums, well worth the emotional investment.

Halsey's fifth studio album, "The Great Impersonator," was made over the last two years, while the pop singer was privately battling both a form of lupus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.

The singer and songwriter’s fifth album processes intense pain through a high-concept homage to role models including Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen and Britney Spears.

“Letter to God (1983),” the eighth song on her new LP “The Great Impersonator,” interpolates the haunting keyboards from Springsteen’s 1984 hit, “I’m On Fire.” Halsey also mimics his singing style, but the rhythmic tempo is slightly faster.

Halsey released her "confessional concept album" The Great Impersonator on Friday. The 30-year-old singer's latest release includes 18 tracks, opening with "Only Living Girl in LA" and culminating in "The Great Impersonator.
