Metro officials introduced a new scanner designed to detect concealed weapons that passengers are carrying. Transit officials unveiled the device on Wednesday at Union Station.

Prompted by violent attacks on Metro's buses and light rails, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) launched a new safety program Wednesday to detect concealed weapons. Similar to security implemented in amusement parks, the concealed weapons detection system will screen passengers as they walk through pillars.

Commuters descending to underground platforms for the A, B and D lines will enter into the testing ground for Metro's 30-day pilot program.

Los Angeles Metro is testing new concealed weapons technology this week as the transit agency attempts to increase security on a system that has been beleaguered by violence. Metro will demonstrate the safety system to the media on Tuesday as it goes through its first tests at Union Station this week.
