Political tension in Bangladesh is growing anew after a leading student group called for the country’s figurehead president to resign over comments he made that appeared to call into question former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation in August.

According to Bangladesh’s constitution, an elected prime minister is required to submit their resignation in writing to the president. Mr Shahabuddin was appointed to his position by parliament after Ms Hasina’s re-election as prime minister for a fourth consecutive term in January.

Bangladesh’s interim government has officially banned the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party, declaring it a "terrorist organisation".

DHAKA: Bangladesh's interim government issued a gazette notification on Wednesday outlawing Awami League's student wing under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009, in a move seen as acquiescing to Jamaat-e-Islami and pro-Jamaat student leaders.

The government said the move has been taken in view of the organisation’s alleged involvement in the killings and destructive and terrorist activities, both directly and through incitement, during the July riots.
